ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE BERNIE COLON
SERVING SINCE 1989

Assistant Chief of Police Bernie Colon has served the San Diego Police Department since 1989. A native of Chicago, Bernie moved to San Diego after high school to attend college.

After a diverse career within the police department, Bernie was promoted to Assistant Chief on May 6, 2022, with his promotion becoming official on May 22nd.

Prior to his promotion to Assistant Chief, Bernie served as Captain of Investigations I where he commanded the Narcotics Unit, Narcotics Task Force, Sex Crimes Investigations, Sex Registrants Unit, Child Abuse Investigations, Internet Crimes Against Children, Vice Operations, Vice Administration, Human Trafficking and the Domestic Violence Investigations Unit.  He also oversaw the Emergency Negotiations Unit as a collateral Duty.

Bernie has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and is a graduate from FBI National Academy Class 265. Bernie also has extensive teaching experience both on-campus and online since 2003, as well as teaching at the Regional Training Academy since 1996.

Bernie is married and has 5 kids as part of a blended family. He stays busy with work and family, but really enjoys teaching and hearing different perspectives in each class.
