Beula Fair, 89, of Hillcrest, a former Old Globe Theatre actress, died Wednesday in a hospital. Cremation was planned by Humphrey Mortuary, with ashes to be scattered at sea. No services were scheduled.

Ms. Fair, a native of Nebraska, lived in the county 50 years and retired in 1962 after working 19 years in the San Diego Police Department record section. In the 1940s, she acted at the Old Globe in "Hay Fever," "Yes, My Darling Daughter," "The Late Christopher Bean," "Ladies in Retirement" and "Madwoman of Chaillot." In 1940, she was named poet laureate of San Diego in judging of more than 1,400 aspirants.

Survivors include a sister, Ynez Hendrickson of San Diego.
