THE THIN BLUE LINE
Donald John Strey, age 88, of Halls, TN, left this world peacefully on January 11, 2026, at his home. Born on September 17, 1937, in Independence, Minnesota, Donald lived a rich and fulfilling life, characterized by service, love, and a passion for family.

Donald was the cherished son of the late Ambrose L. Strey and the late Bernidine M. Majors. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara (Smith) Strey, whose memory he carried in his heart every day. Donald is survived by his loving daughter, Connie (Robert) Layne of Halls, Tennessee, who was his pride and joy. He also leaves behind a treasured granddaughter, Candie (Kevin) Hedge of Burns, Tennessee, along with three great-grandchildren: Callie Hedge, Summer Hedge, and Dylan Hedge, who brought immeasurable joy to his later years.

Donald’s education was a testament to his dedication to his chosen field. He attended Hoover High School in San Diego, California, before pursuing an associate's degree in criminal justice at Grossmont College, La Mesa, California. His commitment to learning was evident throughout his life.

Before his law enforcement career, Donald honorably served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958 and again from 1960 to 1964. During this time, he was stationed on several ships, including the USS Wisconsin (BB 64), USS Forrestal (CVA 59), and USS Jason (AR 8), where he learned the values of discipline, teamwork, and service to his country.

A man of many talents and interests, Donald dedicated a significant portion of his life to public service. He proudly served as a police officer with the San Diego Police Department from 1967 to 1990, after having spent time as a Harbor Police Officer from 1964 to 1967. After his law enforcement career, Donald worked as a truck driver for M.S. Carriers and Barnes Trucking, showcasing his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family.

Beyond his professional life, Donald found joy in various hobbies and interests. He was a craftsman at heart, enjoying working on stained glass projects and woodworking. He cherished camping trips and the time spent with Barbara, exploring nature and creating lasting memories together. His heart swelled with love as he watched his granddaughter grow up, and he found profound happiness in the company of his family, always prioritizing moments of togetherness.

He was a member of the Bethesda Methodist Church in Halls, Tennessee.
