Eugene Merril Gene' Arthur Pt. Loma Eugene Merril Arthur "Gene", 99, a local resident of Pt. Loma and Ocean Beach since 1940 passed away on May 17, 2016 at Scripps Mercy Hospital.

Gene was predeceased by wife Isabel, in 2003.

Gene was born on December 21, 1916 in Waterloo, Iowa but moved west to San Diego when he was 24.

On August 20, 1942 he joined the San Diego Police Department, where he served until his retirement in 1967. During 1943-46, he served his country in World War II as a Sergeant in the United States Army. he was stationed in Africa, Italy and Austria.

His death marks the last member of the San Diego Police Department to have served in World War II.

After retiring from the San Diego Police Department, Gene worked another 16 years as a civilian Detective with the U.S. Naval Station Security Department.

Gene loved to travel, play poker and socialize with his many friends and fellow residents at Monte Vista Retirement Village.

Gene is survived by his two sons, James (Jeanette), Edward and grandson Jonathan.
