Gary was born in the Allied Gardens community of San Diego and joined the Army at the age of 18.  After his enlistment in the Army, Gary continued his service with the California National Guard.

On June 30, 1980, Gary began his career with the San Diego Police Department as a member of the 99th San Diego Police Academy.

During his career, Gary served as an Agent, Field Training Officer and a member of the SWAT Team. he retired on October 2, 2010 after serving 30 years.

Gary was one of the founding members of the San Diego Law Enforcement Emerald Society and served as President in addition to the many volunteer hours spent assisting with Society events.

Gary is survived by his wife, Diane McSweeney Hill and daughters Moira Hill and Chelsea Johnson.
