Gary Wayne Learn, a resident of La Mesa for 54 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in La Mesa on September 16th, 2023 at the age of 83. He was born on March 8th, 1940, in National City, California to Nobel and Jean Learn.

He graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1958 and received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from San Diego State University. After serving in the U.S. Army, he made the most of his degree and experience, restarting a career with the San Diego Police Department. He honorably served the City of San Diego Police Department for 36 years before retiring as Captain in 1997.

Gary was happily married to Carol for 60 years and enjoyed 26 years in retirement.
They enjoyed the outdoors and traveling in their motor home, camping and fishing throughout California - especially in King's Canyon National Park with family and friends. Playing golf and working in his yard were two of his favorite hobbies, and anybody who saw his yards knew just how much he enjoyed tending to his lawns, roses, and gardens. His greatest joy was watching his four grandchildren participate in school activities and play a variety of sports. He was a constant presence in the stands, always present, showing his love and support anywhere they played in the county.

He was known for his witty sense of humor, and being a loving and caring husband, proud father and grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him.

Gary is survived by his wife Carol (Jean Martin of National City), son Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Kristi, daughter Melissa, grandchildren Kassady, Ashley, Mathew, Luke, brother Dr. Richard, sister-in-law Arlene and sister Sharon. For as long as there is a memory, he will forever be in our hearts.
