George P. Mitchell, 77, of Ramona died Tuesday.

He was born in California, Pa.

Mr. Mitchell worked for 26 years as a lieutenant in the San Diego Police Department, and then was employed by the UCSD police department.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Mitchell; sons, George P. Mitchell Jr. of Santee, Michael Mitchell of Brookings, Ore., and Timothy Mitchell of San Diego; and six grandchildren.
