The law enforcement community mourns the loss of retired Anaheim Police Chief John Welter, who peacefully passed away at age 77 following health complications. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary career devoted to protecting others and making a lasting difference in countless lives.

John served the San Diego Police Department for 33 years prior to becoming Anaheim's 32nd Police Chief in 2004. John retired from the SDPD as its Executive Assistant Chief if Police (number two in command). 

During his SDPD career John served as the acting Chief of Police for four months in 2003 as a nationwide search was conducted for a permanent chief. Despite not being selected as SDPD chief, John professionally helped William Lansdowne transition into the top office. 

In both the SDPD and APD, Chief Welter became known not only for his leadership but also for his humility. He believed that leadership meant standing beside the officers he led, not simply directing them from afar.

A motorcycle officer at heart, he made history by becoming the first Anaheim Police Chief to regularly patrol on a police motorcycle. His willingness to remain active in the field earned him admiration and reflected his lifelong passion for serving the community.

Chief Welter's vision also brought meaningful changes that continue today. He helped establish the department's first Chief's Advisory Council and laid the foundation for the John Welter Orange County Family Justice Center, creating resources that continue to support families and strengthen the community.

John retired from the Anaheim Police Department on May 16, 2013.

Those who knew him will remember far more than the titles he held. They will remember his dedication, his compassion, and the example he set through decades of faithful service. As loved ones grieve, thoughts and prayers remain with his wife, Terri, his children, grandchildren, fellow officers, and everyone whose lives were touched by his remarkable legacy.
