Pahrump Valley Times (NV) - Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Leonard Merman Baber Jr., 78, died Aug. 28, 2008, at his home in Pahrump.

He was born in Fayetteville, N.C., May 24, 1930, to Edith E. Black and Leonard M. Baber Sr.

He loved history and was quick to talk about his life's experiences, growing up through the Great Depression.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy and earned numerous prestigious war medals.

Always the policeman, he served proudly on the San Diego Police Force in the late 50s and early 60s. He loved that job better than any in the world.

In his latter years, he was a great handyman, fixing and painting everything. He was also a great cook.

He was a friend to many people in Pahrump, and had a quick smile and a hearty laugh. People were drawn to his conversation.

He is survived by daughters Gail of Tucson, Ariz., and Sandy (Baber) Bump of Portland, Ore.; a son Alan, of Tucson and four grandchildren.

He was loved by his family and will greatly missed.
