In July 1937, the federal Works Project Administration constructed Fire Station number 13 at 7877 Herschel Street to replace an older facility. The new facility also served the police department as the La Jolla substation until 1968.
At the time of its dedication the borders of the command were from Interstate 8 to the Del Mar city limits and from the Pacific Ocean to the cities of
Escondido, Poway and Ramona.
For two years the Northern Division substation was located on the second floor of a building above a Safeway grocery store on Governor Drive.  Rent was $700 per month.
The current Northern Division substation opened in 1971.
As Western, Eastern, Northeastern and Northwestern came into service the borders of Northern Division shrank.

Today Northern Division serves a population of 225,234 people and encompasses 41.3 square miles.

The command serves the neighborhoods of Bay Ho, Bay Park, Clairemont Mesa East, Clairemont Mesa West, La Jolla, Mission Bay Park, Mission Beach, North Clairemont, Pacific Beach Torrey Pines, University City.
