The 2017 relocation of the San Diego Chargers to Los Angeles left the city with a massive 2.5-acre practice facility at 4020 Murphy Canyon Rd.

The police department first occupied the two-story concrete and glass headquarters from September 11, 2017, to February 19, 2018, before ceding it to San Diego State University.

Chief David Nisleit successfully argued for the building to be returned to the police department to house the Neighborhood Policing Division (N.P.D.).

Commissioned by then Captain Scott Wahl and then Lieutenant Charles Lara, N.P.D. along with the Homeless Outreach Team, is not confined to a designated area of the city but are deployed citywide based on quality of life needs.

The N.P.D. building still retains many of the elements of an NFL practice facility including an Olympic size swimming pool, a massive gym, and a professional football style locker room.

The Charger lightning bolts that once adorned the facility have been removed. The former owner’s office, equipped with a kitchen and several private rooms, now serves as an auxiliary office
for the chief of police.

Former Charger place kicker Nick Novak toured the facility in the summer of 2024 and stated, “Wow this place hasn’t changed much at all!” That all changed on February 18, 2026, when the police department held a grand opening of a remodeled facility. Incorporating historical elements while honoring SDPD's fallen officers, the building looks like no police facility in Southern California.
