Beloved husband, father, brother and a life-long public servant, Robert Grundstrom of Oceanside passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Palomar Hospital.

Mr. Grundstrom, 62, most recently was a special education teacher at Roosevelt Middle School in the Vista Unified School District, where he worked with physically and mentally challenged children.

He served as a police officer with the City of San Diego.

He served in the US Marine Corps from 1964 to 1967 during the Vietnam War.

An author, Mr. Grundstrom enjoyed writing and recently had a book published with his poems. About his writing, his wife, Myrna Vallely said: “His works allow the world to see the compassionate and insightful soul he possessed. He was a gentle and positive man who had great strength for the underdog. He brought comfort to all who knew and loved him.”

Mr. Grundstrom was a graduate of San Diego State University first earning a bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and psychology and then a master’s degree in special education.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna; daughter, Annie Vallely; and sisters, Diana Hecht, Mary Barrett, Christine Kelly and Susan Dowell.
