Robert Martin Jirgal, 86, of Carlsbad, California, passed away October 6th, 2010.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 15th, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Carlsbad.

Robert was born August 3rd, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to Martin and Beatrice Jirgal. He moved to Tucson at the age of 4 due to his father’s diagnosis of tuberculosis. After his Father’s passing his mother moved the family to San Diego, California.

Robert graduated from St. Augustine Catholic High School in San Diego in 1941. During his High School years Robert worked as a life guard on the San Diego beaches.

He served in the U. S. Army, in the European theater, for the duration of World War II.

Upon his return from the war he attended Santa Clara University receiving his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in 1949.

Robert worked as an Engineer in the Aerospace Industry in positions of increasing responsibility from 1949 until his retirement in 1987 from the Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Robert married Evelyn Cox Martin on August 16th, 1952. Together they raised 2 sons, Martin and Mark.

Upon Robert’s retirement he and his wife moved to Carlsbad, California. In his years of retirement Robert enjoyed traveling to Europe, playing golf and time spent with his family. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, sons Martin and Mark and their families. He will be missed greatly and remembered forever with love.
