Tom Gast, a former San Diego Police officer, Navy veteran and loving father and husband, died Wednesday of complications from back surgery. He was 58.

Tom spent four years in the Navy, serving off the coast of Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

He joined the police force in 1970 and worked as a motorcyle officer. He retired as an investigator in 1996.

He spent the past eight years tending to his beloved two acres in Alpine, where he enjoyed woodworking and entertaining friends and family.

Tom is survived by his wife of 30 years, Debbie, and children Katie, Matthew and Kevin.
