Deceased Name: Sgt. Dave Kruk; 19-year San Diego police officer 

Sgt. Dave H. Kruk, a 19-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, died Monday at Kaiser Hospital of bone cancer. He was 40.

Sgt. Kruk was born in Canada and came to San Diego where he joined the Police Department in 1971.

He had been executive director of the Police Athletic League since 1988, when the program was introduced in San Diego. In spite of his illness, he continued working until he was hospitalized last week, according to department spokesman Bill Robinson.

He also served on the board of directors of the Police Officers Association and for three years served on the association's Charity and Scholarship Committee. The POA recommended him as Officer of the Year in 1990, an award he was given by the City Club and Chief Bob Burgreen.

He was a coach for Little League and the Youth Soccer League and worked with Girl Scouts.

He was married for 18 years to Jinner Kruk and had three daughters, Briana, Danikka and Camille, all of Tierrasanta.
